Reflections: Joyful Noise
I don't usually write posts for the blog on Sundays, but today I feel the need to share my thoughts, and a small recipe.
I am sitting outside on my deck, enjoying the quiet. It is early morning and the neighbourhood is still slumbering with the silence broken by the occasional bark from the local dogs. One of the neighbours has a water feature in their yard and I can hear the tumbling water. Off in the far distance, a siren reminds me that I am not the only one awake on this cool July morning.
Did I say silence? There is no silence in my backyard! I have never heard so many different bird calls! It is delightful to my ear. There is a continual chatter and whistles and song going on all around. There are the sounds of the fluttering bird wings as they fly from tree to tree, from housetop to housetop. I can hear some birds in the neighbour's rain gutter out behind us. I am not sure just what they are trying to catch, but they are scratching around in it.
I didn't pick the ripened blackberries along the fence and there are lots of birds flitting in and out of the branches as they feast on the juicy tidbits. I hope they leave some for me!
I hung a hummingbird feeder up for the first time this year and the little ones are flitting around, their wings a blur as they hover around the almost empty bottle. There is one little guy that seems to make it his mission to let me know that it is time to replenish his food supply!
I bought some hummingbird nectar mix at the store the first time I filled the feeder. My sister has several feeders in her yard and she never buys the mix anymore. She shared with me her recipe for hummingbirds. It's very simple. I put the recipe below.
I hope you enjoy your Sunday and that you take the time to sit and listen to the not so silent silence in your own backyard!
Hummingbird Nectar
I cup boiling water
1/2 cup sugar
Mix the two together until sugar is dissolved and let cool. Pour into feeder and hang it up.
Don't use honey, apparantly they don't like it.
